Pot Lids

The Victorian pottery kilns produced a vast array of different toothpaste, ointment, and similar containers. The manufacturers of the day used these to fool the general public into thinking
that they were buying something more than they were actually getting.

The design of these pots made you believe that the recess for the toothpaste or ointment
was the size of the container itself. The truth of the matter was quite the opposite in fact.
The upper lid of the container always had a large overhanging lip which gave an illusion of enlarged size. The lower section of the pot was usually thickly walled with a small product
recess. The public of the day were conned into buying little more than a very large pot with
a small amount of product inside.
